SAS and SAS Cargo aim to create responsible and sustainable traffic growth, while reducing environmental impact, and are therefore working with a number of activities. Some of these are:
- Fuel saving program. Target: 3% reduction in 2007/08 and 6–7% by 2010
- "Green approach" landings, approx. 350 kg less CO2 per landing
- Fly slower. Tests shows that a reduction of speed from 860 km/h to 780 km/h equals reduced CO2 by 420 kg on Bergen–Oslo
- CO2 offset program; Customers to buy CO2 reduction equaling emission
- All SAS duty travels CO2 compensated
- Reducing weight on the aircraft; e.g. by new seats
- Eco-cruise STO, OSL and CPH - 2007 depending on distance – position, weather and time allowing
Some additional SAS activities include:
- Participation in national campaigns – e.g. Denmark: One tonne less (07/08)
- Cleaning of the engine – less fuel consumption
- More direct and efficient flights through EU/Nordic project (NUAC)
- Dialogues with aircraft and engine manufacturers, and suppliers of alternative fuels
- Avoiding returning cargo
- Optimized ATM (Air Traffic Management) saving up to 12-15% fuel
