Clever environmental solutions

In its daily work, consideration for the environment is high on SAS Cargo’s agenda, simple because it’s clever for all involved. Below you will find a summary of three clever projects.

New Temptainer

New unique temperature-regulated container that secures the exact temperature during transport:

  • Tare weight of the container is 235 kg less than similar solutions – less weight means less fuel consumption
  • No refrigerant, such as dry ice or brine, is used, eliminating the carbon load both at production and dissipation
  • Driven by lithium-hybrid battery – can be recycled and has a long lifetime of 3 years
  • 5% of the total battery energy is required to keep the Temptainer cool on an 8-hour flight

Aluminum profiles instead of wooden plank

To optimize the loadability of aircraft pallets, SAS Cargo uses aluminum profiles instead of wooden planks:

  • By raising the cargo 10 cm, a PMC pallet can now be loaded with 8 Euro-pallets instead of 5 Euro-pallets
  • Wooden planks are unsafe for staff, aircraft and other equipment, due to shifting
  • Shifting also causes delays in loading and unloading of trucks
  • Wooden planks are expensive , environmentally unfriendly and are only used one time
  • Instability is avoided with aluminum rails, and utilization can be raised by up to 105-110%

New truck configuration

Air cargo is normally distributed to and from the hubs by road transport. To make this as efficient as possible, SAS Cargo has participated in the development of a new smart trailer solution where a total of 7 pallets are loaded in two levels:

  • New trailer is only 18 m long, which means less fuel consumption
  • 7 ULD can be loaded, instead of traditional 4 ULD – 75% increase
  • Different and flexible loading combination
