Air transport effects

Almost any form of transport is, by definition, not environment-friendly. Fuel combustion causes a rise in atmospheric CO2 and other emissions, contributing to global climate change.

Even so, modern society wouldn’t function without transport. Air transportation, as an example, ensures that remote areas of a country  becomes connected, and that we all can enjoy fresh products all year around.

The air industry naturally plays its part in the global climate change, even if its share of the total amount of emissions only is around 2% (see diagram). As an example, greenhouse gas emissions are an unavoidable effect of airline operations, and if we are not going to stop travelling and transporting by air, the airline industry must minimize the impact of its transport.

At heart, the air industry has a very long-term focus. The average lifetime of an aircraft is about 20 to 30 years, with regular modifications or upgrades to keep it in good flying condition and in conformance with international regulations. For SAS Cargo, continuous improvement in environmental performance is a heartfelt commitment throughout the organization.
